WYOMING

YEAR VISITED: 2012, 2015, 2018, and 2020.

FAVORITE CITIES AND EXPERIENCES: While Wyoming has an enormous amount of natural beauty, it has yet to be a destination visit for our family. However we have driven through the state, on I-80 and I-90, on multiple occasions while on our way elsewhere. On nearly every visit we have spent the night in a cheap hotel in Laramie. Considering we were just looking for a place to sleep after a long day of driving, we typically reserved a budget friendly hotel that our family has since nicknamed ‘Del Dumpo.’ For the record there are nice hotels in Laramie and it is a lovely town, we have just stayed at run down cheap locations. We have enjoyed touring the University of Wyoming and my Dad and I, while heading to the College World Series in Omaha, saw one of the Jurassic Park movies at an old in town movie theater.

STADIUMS AND/OR SPORTING EVENTS: I haven’t seen any games in the state of Wyoming, but my family and I have walked into University of Wyoming’s War Memorial Stadium.

At an elevation of over 7,000 feet, it is the highest D-1 stadium in the country and holds 29,000 fans.

ADVENTURE(S): In 2012, while on our way to Omaha, Nebraska we stopped and toured Devils Tower and again in 2020. Like many other movie buffs, this was a destination made famous to me by the blockbuster movie, Close Encounters of the Third Kind.

If not familiar with the movie, this was the location chosen to make contact with aliens. The rock itself rises nearly straight up and stands over 1,000 feet tall. A fun fact is that Devils Tower was the first United States national monument dedicated by President Roosevelt in 1906.

In 2018 Team Castro made our first visit to Yellowstone National Park.

We entered the park, which is over 2.2 million acres and larger than the states of Rhode Island and Delaware, from the north and exited east on highway 14.

While in the park we visited Old Faithful, various hot springs and geysers, and saw buffalo along the road. Unfortunately we only had one day in the park and there are many sites we missed. Yellowstone is a place we would like to return to.

NOTABLE DESTINATIONS & STOPS: After exiting Yellowstone we drove another couple hours and spent the night in Cody.

We stayed at a cabin in a KOA park where the family had a blast. I would highly recommend this at least once – our girls love them. That night we ate at Bubba’s Barbeque and it was here that we all sampled an appetizer of Rocky Mountain Oysters (taste like chicken).

In my assessement, Cody is a quintessential cowboy town. While we haven’t experienced it, Cody is the home of the Buffalo Bill Center of the West, Nightly Rodeo, and the Old Trail Town.
